What is a FIRE number?

FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) often uses a portfolio target equal to annual spending divided by a planned withdrawal rate. It is a planning illustration, not a guarantee of sustainable withdrawals.

Formula

FIRE number = Annual expenses ÷ (Withdrawal rate ÷ 100)
Progress % = Current investments ÷ FIRE number × 100
Gap = max(0, FIRE number − Current investments)

Coast FIRE corpus today = FIRE number ÷ (1 + r)^years
(so invested amount can grow to the FIRE number without further contributions)

Example

Annual expenses ₹6,00,000 at 4% withdrawal → FIRE number ₹1.5 crore. With ₹15 lakh invested: progress 10%, gap ₹1.35 crore. If retirement is 15 years away at 10% expected return, Coast FIRE corpus today ≈ ₹1.5 crore ÷ (1.10)^15.

FAQ

Is 4% safe?

The “4% rule” is a historical illustration from certain markets and periods. Your safe rate may differ with inflation, taxes, fees, and sequence risk.

What is Coast FIRE?

Coast FIRE estimates how much you need invested today so that compounding alone can reach your FIRE number by a target year — without new contributions in the model.
